This is an image of the last meal served at Alcatraz Federal Prison. It shows some continuity in the Bureau of Prisons’ menus over the past 58 years. However, in the contemporary Bureau chow line, you would never get coffee, and even “butter” is a thing of the past. In the BOP of now, you wouldn’t get an egg on a weekday (21 March 1963 happened to be a Thursday.) Toast and bread would be overkill on today’s menu. I know if you happen to look at the BOP menu posted online, it seems to be remarkably similar to the 1963 menu, but let’s just say that prison administrators love to overstate their largess. Nowadays you get what cereal they give you — cold or hot — take your carton of milk before it expires, get out and shut up. Oh and thank God for the current lack of stewed fruit, though the topic of fresh fruit is really something for another post.
