If you can convince federal prison authorities that you have a substance abuse program, you can sign up for the Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program (RDAP) that offers you a year off your sentence if you complete the roughly 9 month course. Well, I should say that it offers some inmates a year off, not all felonies are eligible for sentence reduction, for instance, any kind of sex offense though drug kingpins are embraced with a year’s relief. It’s easy to see how this is a popular option, and the ways of trying to game this system are myriad.
