More drug education

If you can convince federal prison authorities that you have a substance abuse program, you can sign up for the Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program (RDAP) that offers you a year off your sentence if you complete the roughly 9 month course. Well, I should say that it offers some inmates a year off, not all felonies are eligible for sentence reduction, for instance, any kind of sex offense though drug kingpins are embraced with a year’s relief. It’s easy to see how this is a popular option, and the ways of trying to game this system are myriad. Nonetheless, the program is still pretty abysmal, amounting to a kind of shaming in the name of deprogramming inmates from “criminal thinking.” All this once again sponsored by The Change Companies and winked at by everybody in the system. After all, any respectable inmate knows that if you want prime drugs behind bars, you should seek out the people in the RDAP program to get them. They are happy to provide them for a profit even as they go through a year’s worth of personal humiliation for a year off their sentences.

Tell me if these two things jibe:

A prison drug class and a bribe.

You pay off the “junkies”

To tell them they’re monkeys

But the drug trade still keeps them alive.
